This week I was busy working on our budget for year 2008 with my GM and the budget meeting which was scheduled on today was postponed to next year, early January, 2008. It's always be the case that most of the meeting involving my big bosses/directors will be delayed or postponed to a later date and yet not confirmed!!!!!
Anyway we have done our cost saving for 2008 and discussed with our CEO yesterday. As usual the sensitive expenses would not allow to bring out and discuss face to face, if not we will get scolded left right centre. :-) If this cannot say, that cannot say and what to be said??? Mainly the cost saving would be come from the staff expenses which most of the bosses are more interested to hear and cut but never never mentioned their expenses which is the majority contribution of the total company expenses that need to be reviewed for the benefit of the company as a whole. The point here is who dare to bring it out? None of us, neither me nor my GM. It's not we don't dare to bring out but we are clearly know the end result which is status quo. Wasting time!!!
Beside that, I was also busy working on a risk which would require placement to the London market. As you know London only starts work at 5.00pm our Malaysian time. Last few days including now, I have to stay back in office to communicate with London on getting a quote from our London counterpart. It's always the case that we must be extra alert and careful when dealing and talking with London people. I think it's their good culture with good manner, comments carried weight and responded professionally.
Our Malaysia culture especially in my industry is totally different and it's because of the people's character and the way of double meaning communication sometimes that cause the change of characteristic of our industry. Black mail, poison words, back stab etc are the very common act in our industry and all these are created by people. We have to bear and live with it if we choose to continue in our industry but of course we could avoid to mix around with those people.
By the way, the choice is in our hand and hope for the best to come.

It may not be fair to mention that only in our industry that there are issue with professionalism, in fact it is everywhere where human could live.
In overseas, it could be done at a different level whereby Asian normally felt inferior when comparing to them. We always have preference or careful when dealing with Ahmo though may be just another person whose intelligent may not be on par with us...but still we may felt inferior to them...
Try to watch the movie of deception, back stabbing etc from the West...it sama-sama saje.
Changes must always start from us and we must not utter the word "no choice" though I do hear sometime from you :) It is tough definitely but with encouragement we can be better.
It is undeniable that corruption and professional missconduct also happens in Western coutries. However there is a distinct different in the value of ethic, accountability and credibility where they are adhere to.
Knowlege could be learn in school, search in internet and available from other printed medias. Knowledege certainly will make an individual more intelligent however that does not make him or her wiser.
The value that a society hold will determine whether it is underdevelop, developing or developed. Malaysia could only be "developed" where its citizen develop the correct value.
yeah, i do agree that the issue of professionalism happen everywhere and not just in our Asian countries.
When I mentioned 'no choice' as I would still continue in the company and when I have 'a choice' I will start my new opportunity. But again I have to make myself very clear that I would not follow what the company culture have had all these while when the time I move on.
william, when a person with a good value of ethic, acountablity and credibility in him/her, do you think that the issue of corruption and professional misconduct will happen in him/her?
The knowledge that one could obtain anywhere either internet, medias or others won't be necessary that he/she will be more intelligent, knowledgable, accountable etc as he/she might learnt and forget. Beside that, the bad value also could be obtainable from the internet, medias and even our country leaders. It all depend on individual whether he/she choose to follow or not to follow.
A citizen's good value or many citizens' good value can't really change and determine the development of a country. If a country's leader carried with a good value, that will determine the development of the country.
If a person have good value, he might not be corrupted.
However he is still accountable for any mistake he make. A professional has to make decisions. There are risks associated with the decisions that he make. If the risks are not studied cafefully and there is a mistake than he might be subjected to professional missconduct.
